Cinematographer Richard Deakins at the Academy Awards in 2011, when he was nominated for Best Cinematography for his work on the Coen brothers. ![]() Heres a primer on Roger Deakins cinematography and style. Without a deeply thought-out mise-en-scene and a camera that uses it to enhance its frame, the film would feel far less rooted in its own built reality. I’d argue, however, this is his best chance for winning since 2002 when his work on The Man Who Wasn’t There lost (unfairly I might add) to Andrew Lesnie for his work on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
